Bits and Pieces

February 16, 2012

A few things that stuck out to me this week on the web:

  • Russell Moore’s fantastic article on worship. “When I insist that the rest of the congregation serve as back-up singers in my own little nostalgic hit parade of back-home Mississippi hymns, I am worshipping in the spirit all right. It’s just not the Holy Spirit. I’m worshipping myself, in the spirit of self-exaltation. And it’s easy to be a Satanist when you can get your way in worship planning
  • Trevin Wax wrote about Death, Superstars, and Common Grace. His take is, essentially, that the Devil isn’t only interested in destroying God’s work of redeeming grace, but his gifts of common grace as well.
  • Kathy Keller wrote Why the City is a Wonderful Place to Raise Children, which runs counter-intuitively to many of the arguments against city life.
  • Photographer Jeremy Cowart tweeted a link to this blog about The Social Responsibility of Photographers. It’s a great little rant about retouching photos for Senior portraits, and a commentary on our culture’s assessment of beauty. (Jeremy is one of my favorite Twitter follows - a professional photographer who does a ton of portrait work for the music business and has done some spectacular art pieces as well).
  • And for my fellow guitar geeks: Bill Frisell talks to the Fretboard Journal folks about his current guitar and effects setup.

“They sound like what watercress-sandwich-eating Episcopalians from Connecticut might sing (not that there’s anything wrong with that).”

Best line in the article. Thanks for the link, brother.
