Friday is for Food, Weekly Round-Up, Mad Men atTGC

March 23, 2012

A few things today:

First, Fridays are for food, and I don’t want to miss this week. One of the best basic skills to cultivate is knife work. Here’s a helpful tutorial from Anthony Bourdain on basic knife work.

Which reminds me of Robert Farrar Capon’s meditation on the humble onion in The Supper of the Lamb. If you love food, cooking, theology, or good writing, Capon’s book is well worth reading.

Weekly Round-Up

There’s been some good dialogue about the Trayvon Martin Tragedy online. The more that details emerge, the sadder the story gets. Here’s some reading that has struck me one way or another:

  • John Piper’s commentary
  • Gail Collins on the role of the gun lobby
  • Shai Linne linked up this article, which is reflections of a mother on the topic.
  • My wife found this article, which similarly (and movingly) reflects from the perspective of a mother.

Let’s keep praying for peace and justice as events unfold.

New Post at TGC

I have a new article posted over at the Gospel Coalition on why we love Mad Men. If you’re like me at all, you can’t wait for Sunday night.

Really enjoyed your rundown on Mad Men. I’ve popped in and out of that show, tried to catch up on Netflix, to no avail, but I agree with your thoughts on the show. It does a really fantastic job of pointing to our sin, our longing for our idols (money, sex, power, success), and demonstrates how none of those things are even truly going to bring us anything but pain and suffering. I doubt that Matt Weiner hopes people watch the show, recognize their own sin, and are drawn into repentance, but…

The reality is the show is out there, and people watch it. Both Christians and non-Christians and because they are watching it, it’s a great opportunity to point out exactly what you have, and how the Gospel smashes all of that through God’s grace, repentance and sin’s cancellation at the cross through Christ’s suffering. Nice thoughts, Cos.

Mike,

Thanks for continually posting for the foodies on Fridays. Enjoyed the Bourdain video. Here is another video on knife skills that I like to point people to when they are first trying out their skills in the kitchen - (Jamie Oliver) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGQltxIipFg
